SNIDERO: If we can call attention to a worthy, under-recognized
younger player, the glistening, well-centered sound of Jim Snidero's lightly
soaring alto sax is a pleasure. And he appreciates lyricism. He understands
that if you're playing a number with an appealing melody, be it Jerome
Kern's "Long Ago and Far Away" from a half-century ago or Cedar
Walton's "Twilight Waltz" of more recent provenance, you must
let that pure melody shine through. Tonight and tomorrow at Small's, he's celebrating the release of his CD, "Standards Plus." If he does no more than play his stirring version of Monk's "Round Midnight" from that CD, you'll get your money's worth. Snidero's CD, with right-on-target liner notes by the respected Bill Milkowski (author of "Jako"), is the third impressive recent release (the others are by trombonist Bill Watrous and pianist Bruce Barth) from Double Time Records, emerging as a significant independent label. The $10 admission fee at Small's, by the way, includes free juice. 183 W. 10th St. at Seventh Avenue; (212) 929-7565. - Chip Deffaa |
